Not nearly as wicked as its name implies, this ornamental sweet potato vine has a trailing habit and heart shaped, deep purplish black leaves. Grow on a trellis with morning sun surrounded by Helichrysum ‘Licorice Splash’ or Heuchera ‘Key Lime Pie’ for a stunning effect. It also can be a fun groundcover, or hang from a container or basket. Flowers are generally absent. Growth is usually 24 to 36 inches.
Ornamental sweet potatos are grown from tubers, and in Zones 10 and 11 would be considered perennial. In other zones they are annual, although the tubers can be dug up before the first frost and stored. Even as an annual, they are fun to grow because they are so fast and have such stunning color. In cooler climates sweet potatoes can be grown in full sun, but in hot dry locations they prefer some protection from afternoon sun.
