Lavandula angustifolia / ENGLISH LAVENDER The classic lavender fragrance, English lavenders are mid-Spring to early summer bloomers, with darker colored flowers and shorter flower spikes. They are slightly more susceptible to root rots, so need to be grown in a well drained soil in full sun. Amend the growing site with compost and plant on small mounds to improve drainage. Lavenders are very drought tolerant - once they are established watering once a week is enough. Fertilize lightly, once a year in late winter. Heavy pruning after the bloom will keep the plant productive and tidy.

Lavandula x intermedia / LAVINDINS Hybrids of L. angustifolia and L latifolia, these are slightly hardier, often larger growing lavenders. They bloom later in the season, usually June and July. These are the lavenders commonly grown for the perfume and essential oil industry. In general, lavandins tend to have longer flower spikes and fatter flowers. They require full sun and good drainage, and should be pruned heavily after bloom. Lavenders are very drought tolerant - once they are established watering once a week is enough. Fertilize lightly, once a year in late winter.
L. x intermedia ‘Alba’ (E/2’;S) Long spikes of fragrant white flowers. Requires excellent drainage, do not overhead water.
L. x intermedia ‘Dutch’ (E/3’;S) Very silvery foliage, very tall narrow flower spikes tend to bloom throughout the summer.

L. x intermedia ‘Grosso’ (E/2’;’S) Compact lavender, one of the most common grown in the fields of France. Deep violet flowers dry beautifully. Plant is slow to grow the first year in the ground but is one of showiest, and worth the investment.
L. x intermedia ‘Provence’ (E/30";S) Another common lavender for commercial production. Violet green flowers, dries to a lavender/gray. Very fast growing, very hardy, very productive. Great for sachets and wands. One of the most popular.
L. x intermedia ‘Silver Edge’ (E/24";S) Medium purple flowers on a variegated plant. Very showy, even when not in bloom. Fragrant flowers are good for cutting.
L. x intermedia ‘Super’ (E/3’;S) Large light violet green flower heads, considered to be one of the best for essential oil.

L. x heterophylla - SWEET LAVENDER (E/3’;S) Fast growing, early blooming, has a strong lemony/lavender fragrance. Blooms heavy, often 3 times a season if pruned regularly. Marginally hardy below 20 degrees.
L. lanata - WOOLY (TP/2’;S) Silvery, twisted leaves and deep purple flowers. Specimen plant. Tempermental, needs very well drained soil, no overhead watering. Hardy to 20 degrees.
Lavandula pinnata - FERNLEAF LAVENDER (TP/2’;S) Light green ferny foliage with showy, light purple flowers that bloom almost continuously. Lemon fragrance. In most areas, treat this as an annual.
L. ‘Richard Gray’ (E/12”;S) Small dense plant with dark violet flowers on 12 inch stems. This lavender is ideal for small areas or rock gardens. NEW FOR 2006!

Leonotis leonurus - LION’S TAIL (TP/4-6’;S) Tall growing with whorls of bright fuzzy orange flowers mid-summer thru fall. Excellent for hummingbirds, cut flower. May not be hardy.
Leonoris cardiaca - MOTHERWORT (H/3’;PS-S) Soft, attractive foliage with spikes of pink flowers, easy to grow. Medicinal, bee plant.

Liatris punctata - GAYFEATHER (H/2’;S-PS) Leaves somewhat grass-like, tall reddish purple flower spikes mid summer. Excellent for butterflies, cut flower. Drought tolerant. Divide bulbs in early spring.

Linum perenne - PERENNIAL FLAX (H/2';S) Fully short shrub like plant with soft wispy foliage and sky blue flowers that open in the morning, fall off in the afternoon and are replaced with new flowers daily during spring and early summer. A real show stopper in bloom, with attractive foliage when it is not in bloom.
Lippia graveolens - MEXICAN OREGANO (TP/4’;S) Not a true oregano, but commonly used in it native Mexico the same way. Much stronger in flavor than Origanum.
Lonicera sempirvirens 'Blanche Sandman' (E/8';S-PS) Fast growing vine with scarlet blossoms with ivory throats, blooms from early summer through frost. Hummingbirds love this one! Introduced in 2004.
Marrubium incanum - SILVER HOREHOUND (P/18’;S) Wooly, silver leaves, showy light pink flower spikes. Not invasive. Drought tolerant.
Marrubium vulgare - HOREHOUND (H/2’;S) Soft gray furry foliage, orange flowers. Easily self sows, invasive. Remove flowers to reduce spread.
Mentha / MINTS All mints are invasive, growing rapidly by underground runners. Keep confined to a pot, or confine to an area surrounded by borders, such as walls and concrete walks. Do not plant near lawns. Very hardy plants, usually dying back to the ground in winter, even when kept as a house plant. Mints like water and part sun, but will survive drought condition.

Origanum acutidens - (SE/1’;S-PS) Showy and stunning Turkish ornamental produces a marvelous pungent spicy aroma for a more pleasurable garden. Compact mounds are covered by arching stems of large oval chartreuse bracts partially hiding pink flowers. Great for rock gardens or cascading out of planters. Introduced in 2005.
Origanum ‘Barbara Tingey’ - (SE/1’;S-PS) Rounded leathery leaves with trailing stems, great for baskets and containers. Origanum libonaticum - HOPFLOWER OREGANO - (SE/2’;PS) Vigorous trailing herb with hop-like bracts of lavender and chartreuse through the summer and fall.
